In eager anticipation of Tommy Hilfiger's fashion presentation later in the week I thought I would whet your appetite (and mine) with a look at the American Voyage and Prep Club Collections for Spring 2013. The chevron silk dresses, crisp white blazers and ever classic navy striped tees have me wanting to find and subsequently board the nearest yacht to get a glimpse of what Hilfiger was inspired by when he designed this collection. The effortless sophistication and the men's double breasted blazers (and those navy/red loafers!!) have me brimming with excitement at the chance to view the collection firsthand. Keep an eye on Miss Jones for more of this iconic label's nautical goodness coming very soon. On a side note, how amazing does Dee Hilfiger look these days?
Spring 2013 is inspired by the spirit of a nautical journey. From sea to sand, deck to harbor, sailing life informs the easy, fluid attitude of the collection. The effortless “off-duty” style calls to mind Jackie O and Lauren Hutton entering ports of call in exotic locales. The look is quintessentially American, but at home anywhere in the world.
From tonal sailcloth inspired patchwork to the brand’s signature red, white, and blue, the collection brings a youthful sense of adventure to the classics. Stripes are reinvented with playful patterns and nautical motifs – a breton version goes lux in pieced leather. Menswear favorites are reinterpreted in slouchy printed silk suits, oversized blouses and cableknit varsity sweaters. Dresses are a key silhouette – canvas shirtdresses are accented with lattice lacing and grommet details for a sporty touch while draped silk styles move effortlessly from daytime to evening. Colorblocked handbags in exaggerated proportions are the perfect traveling companion. The new boat shoe pops against a stacked white heel, while flat espadrilles lend a nonchalant ease to dramatic trapeze gowns for cocktail hour. Giving spirited independence to iconic style, the course is set for an American Voyage.
For the Spring 2013 men’s collection, heritage prep is reconsidered with a modern execution and unbuttoned ease inspired by the codes and camaraderie of collegiate sporting clubs. The classics are reinvented with a youthful irreverence that discards the rules and champions a new approach to iconic men’s pieces. From the yacht club to the cricket pitch, the new spring uniform embraces a relaxed American attitude.
The brand’s hallmark colors – spirited blues, crisp whites and athletic reds – feature prominently in nautical rope print stripes, regatta jackets and regimental details. Hybrid themes play throughout – the breton jersey fused with a classic oxford and a striped leather espadrille sneaker. Unexpected twists bring a lighthearted feel, from the quintessential collegiate blazer done in jersey to the knit tie incorporated onto the front placket of shirts. For unscripted adventures, outerwear is given a rebellious edge with the canvas meets leather moto-trench and suede desert bomber jacket. Distressed chinos and denim are introduced in a nonchalant fit that feels familiar, like well-worn vintage favorites. Gold insignia buttons and varsity crests are paired with bold accents like racing stripes. The rules of the game have changed, but the look is unmistakably American Prep.
